Why I Usually Cheer For A Gator Win On Florida-Georgia Weekend

Last weekend was particularly difficult for me. Georgia Tech beat FSU on a last second blocked field goal attempt and returned for a touchdown with no time left essentially. *SIGH* It was bad enough that my husband's team, GT, won. But what followed the game, honestly, made me a little disgusted.

My husband, blissfully asleep during said last play of the game, had no idea until the morning what the final score was at the end of the game. In fact, he didn't even have to turn on Sportscenter. All he had to do was look at his phone. 3 Congratulatory text Messages. 2 from Gator fans. 1 from a Ga Tech fan (technically doesn't count because it was his dad. LOL). FSU hadn't lost a ACC conference game in almost 3 yrs. so it stung a little.

So Friday in my office someone said "Who are you rooting for this weekend?" and seeing my FSU shirt backtracked and said "oh that's right. You are a FSU fan so your probably cheering for Georgia!"

Not so fast. I usually cheer for Florida. I know. Why would I want to do something like that? They do nothing but torture me and even when we went to they Natty, they cheered for Auburn citing SEC loyalty. What do they call the enemy of my enemy? My friend. So I need Georgia to lay down every year.

Just so we can gain some perspective, let's talk about Florida-Georgia and it's rivalry. The rivalry began (depending on who you talk to, for sake of argument we'll take the Gators side) November 6, 1915 in Jacksonville with a Georgia win. Yeah you read that right 1915. Some 43 yrs from the time of the first Florida-Florida State game. The game has also been consistently played in Jacksonville every year since 1933. The record is (according to Florida records) Georgia leads the rivalry 49-42-2.

Historically speaking, Florida-Florida State began "Officially" in November 22, 1958. There's some talk about the Florida Men's Seminary school but I'm not counting that. Florida leads the rivalry 34-23-2. Now I did not take into account the Bowl games, because we are strictly speaking of the "game at the end of November".

Why do I need Georgia to lay down? Because if Florida wins, FSU has a 60% chance of beating Florida Thanksgiving weekend. I know that's only 10% more than a 50/50 chance, but I'll take it. Go Gators (Florida-Georgia weekend only).

Blake Bortles, We Need To Have A Talk

I've tried to wait to write this blog but after the game today, it just can't wait.

Blake Bortles. Yes, you. You and I need to have a discussion. I hardly ever question playcalling. I questioned it when Seattle threw into the end zone instead of sending Marshawn Lynch and lost the Super Bowl. I have watched many years of football. I'm not going to tell you how many because I do not want to tell my age. But we'll safely say longer than you've been alive. I might not know about all the plays. I know when a blitz is coming, I know the "I" formation. I understand 4-3 and 3-4.

However, the next time you compare yourself to me and refer to me as a "kindergartner" and you a "college student", you need to re-think that. I have these things called "EYES". They don't lie. And what your team is showing me does not pass the eye test. IT JUST DOESN'T!!!!!!

You speak of that which you know NOTHING about. What is that you might ask?! The long-suffering of the Jaguar fan. You know nothing about sitting in seats. You know nothing about how this feels to spend good hard earned money, being told a team is built, and then being told "well we might have made a mistake by going to young". Oh yeah, ya think? I think, I see!!! That makes me NOT a kindergartner.

You see, Blake, I've been in those seats for 11 years. And for most of those 11 years (Let me explain to you, Blake, That means for at least 6-8 years), we have been taken to a place called rebuilding. Rebuilding has meant many a things. I won't go into what all those things are since you are a college student and I'm a kindergartner. But what it means most to me is I have watched a losing team for the majority of my season ticket holderhood. And I'm really really tired of it.

Notice I haven't called any attention to play calling. Have I? No. I'm more worried about the crappy execution, which I keep getting promised by Gus Bradley, is going to EVENTUALLY go the other way?! As a college student, can you tell me how long should I need to wait? I'm just a kindergartner so I have no concept of time.

(Oh and I'm on Instagram, so I saw the #TBT of you and your kindergarten teacher after you made that statement. I didn't think it was cute.)

So don't tell me how I'm a kindergartner and you are a college student. Tell me why you keep throwing interceptions and also, tell me why your a college student and I'm a FREAKING kindergartner. Tell me again, BLAKE!!!!!

Well. Like Urban Meyer saying he needed a break from coaching because of his heart, I lied. May 15th, I blogged I would be back and better than ever. Unfortunately, I suffered from Post Traumatic Football Syndrome. An underwhelming last season from the Jags, a dismal performance from FSU in the Rose Bowl Playoff Game, and to top it all off, Dante Fowler tearing his ACL in the first OTA. There's only so much a football chick can take. There may or may not have been a few tears shed over these events. Yes I know, there's no crying in football. I was so overwhelmed. I couldn't trash talk. Well, I could trash talk but only about the Florida Gators. But that gets old after awhile.

Before I know it, there's a new season and it's time to pull myself up by the boot straps.

So. Here I am. I'm wondering how in the world FSU will do it without Jameis Winston. How will the Jaguars and Gus Bradley perform so that we don't start over with a new regime if a lackluster season occurs. How. HOW. 

How will this all be done? 

It sort of reminds me of the season the Jags had a couple of years ago with Josh Scobee's 59 yard field goal and David Garrard's Hail Mary. That was awesome. I was so naive the next season and became devastated when Garrard was cut and we sucked. When will we be good again? WHEN? 

Ok. So I've whined sufficiently. 

I want to believe Sean Maguire at FSU can show me something and if he can't Everett Golson is behind him. I want to believe BoBo Wilson can show me some amazing Wide Receiving. Derwin James and Jalen Ramsey..... There are closer than anyone to being elite. 

I want to believe Blake Bortles can show me something. I want to believe Allen Robinson and Rashad Greene can show me something. I want to believe the defense is at the ready (especially after all the crying Victor Cruz from the Giants did after we played them). That O-Line though.....

So you're asking what the point is. The point is, this might be Jacksonville, Florida but really this is Missouri. And you MUST "Show Me".

Football Hiatus: No More!!

So, it's been almost 4 months since my last post. Lots of things have happened in my life and football has taken a 3rd row seat.  So I hopefully plan on churning out several blogs in the next week or so. It's amazing isn't it? What pushes us to be passionate?


Is it someone who has broken a relationship dear to us (not necessarily of the opposite sex but more like divorcing a family member of yours)? Is it a situation that makes us sit down and think "what's wrong with this"? Or is it a passionate interest in something you love?




I was given the opportunity to give up this blog and become an employee of an organization. I turned it down. Truth be told, I was giving up FaceBook and Twitter as well. Now I'll be the first to tell you, I am no Twitter maven. None of my friends are active on Twitter, but I always know the juice on everything usually as it happens. I definitely follow the right people.


This blog is nothing important in the grand scheme of things. But it's important to me. I often have trouble communicating my knowledge unless I can trash talk. Trash talk seems to be the only way some people will listen.


 Yes. I have been described as a wallflower, but I AM NOT FILTH that even Paul Finebaum thinks I am. More on that later.


I could not give up my version of saying how I feel in this blog. There is no reporting here, only my opinions. No, I am no English major. But I try really hard to make sense and spell things right. So, if you are reading this, I thank you. If you know someone who might like it, please share. And if anyone knows anybody in Antarctica, could you please have them read one blog post??!! If I can get Antarctica, then all seven continents will have read Ramblings Of A Football Chick.

Urban Meyer:Bandwagon Coach

Shortly after Urban Meyer, coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, won what the analysts say is the most "legitimate" National Championship of our time (insert eye roll), everyone i.e.- Kirk Herbstreit, began saying that Meyer had the best winning percentage of any coach since World War II. Yeah? 

HOLD ON PLAYA.
I don't doubt those numbers, but is winning the only thing that matters when we are speaking about coaches? Or, how many coaching vacancies has one filled and how many years do they stay?
Let's start with the first question: Is winning the only thing? Well no. It's not the only thing, but it sure doesn't hurt. Bill Parcells once said in regards to Lawrence Taylor, my job as a coach is to make men better players and better men. Now I'm paraphrasing, but can we say that's what Urban Meyer does? Ahem. Aaron Hernandez. He's allegedly killed how many people? Reportedly, Urban couldn't wait to get rid of him. Percy Harvin. Percy didn't like doing stairs to warm-up during practice, so Meyer changed warm-ups to shooting hoops. Really? Why is Braxton Miller "flirting" with Jimbo Fisher and FSU football?! Because he knows he's knows he's not in a pro style offense at OSU. He wants to go first round like all of Jimbo's QBs. I'm not saying they are wildly successful after that, but they go 1st round.  Tim Tebow was perfect as far as off the field. Arguably, Meyer could've done some things to help with his mechanics but chose not to because he was so good at the college level. However, that hurt him on a professional level. Those are the obvious examples.
Let's talk about how many places Meyer has been a head coach and how long he was there:
Bowling Green: 2001-2002
Utah: 2003-2004
Florida: 2005-2010

















Ohio State: 2012-present


As you can see, he hasn't been anywhere over 5 years. His worst season record as a head coach came in his last year at Florida and without Tim Tebow, 8-5. Suddenly he had family and health concerns and needed to leave Florida. Then 10 months later, he was suddenly swooped up by Ohio State. If I was an Ohio State fan, I would be waiting for the other shoe to drop. Just know, Urban Meyer is leaving sooner rather than later. Urban Meyer is a Bandwagon Coach.

FSU Football Fandom Gone Astray

You ever had that feeling that you know too much about something. You love it but at some point it's like being shown how sausage is made? It sneaks up on you. Suddenly, there you are, driving down the road, with Lancôme Mascara streaming down your face. Meanwhile, your team, FSU is getting schooled by some Johnny-Come-Lately, Oregon, who by the way, only knows how to play one type of football: Hurry-Up. Seriously??!! That's your answer to what's supposed to be a chess-like game?! Speed dating??!! Do you think that will serve Marcus Mariota well in the NFL?! Unless he goes to Chip Kelly's team, the Philadelphia Eagles, that will not serve him well. He will have to learn how to read defenses and quickly. He won't be able to hurry back to the line of scrimmage, call a play, and then get the play off. NFL is bigger, faster, stronger. Anyone else notice what a friend of mine noticed about the Eagles this year??!! How they petered out after 2/3-3/4 of the season?
Why is that? Let me explain: The NFL is 16 regular season games + 4 pre-season games+ however far you make it to the playoffs. And to get to the Super Bowl that could be 3-4 games depending on whether or not you have a BYE the first week ( I could be wrong about those numbers but just go with me here). So, to get to a Super Bowl, that's the ultimate goal, you have to play around 23-24 games.
College is 12 games+ Conference Championship 1 game+ 2 playoff games. So we are talking 15 games. (Also, I believe college can have more players which makes rotating in and out better, facilitating the hurry-up offense).
So, we are talking an 8-9 game difference. That means 8-9 more games and chances for injury in the NFL. That means that more than likely you will get the best out of your players early. And we all know that the successful teams get hot later in the season and that is what gets them a long way in the playoffs. And Hurry-up does not favor that.
(Incidentally, John Gruden says the only way to stop Hurry-Up is to get your lineman to cry cramp on every other play. LOL.)
Another reason for Hurry-up is that you get the next play out of the gate before penalties get assessed, quite frankly. If the flag is not thrown to stop the play, any debate or discussion doesn't matter because Oregon already has the ball off onto the next play and God Bless them, the refs were SEC. We all know about SEC refs and what they stand for: So Everybody Cheats.


Am I bitter? Absolutely. And we won't even go into the "NOOOOO MEANS NOOOOO" debate. Who started it BLAH BLAH BLAH. That was an insult to the Seminole tribe and women. But whatever.


Was it ever really my intention to be able to know/observe all these things? No. I just want to enjoy the game. That has almost assuredly become impossible due in part to the knowledge I have gained. I personally believe that it could be from winning 29 games and losing 1 really important game last. More importantly, I wouldn't change that for the world.

Apparently, the 2 Oregon players were drug tested BEFORE the Rose Bowl and tested positive for drug use, whether it was recreational or otherwise I don't know. I don't know when results were given, but they won't play in the National Championship game. Timing. It's everything. Anybody ready for a do-over?!?

It has been a rough almost 48 hrs. Sitting at my perch here at Biscottis. Wearing my jeans black shirt and hat. Just sitting here trying not to lose it (having just seen a house on my way here decked out in Oregon crap that's never had Oregon crap on it before #Bandwagoner.) My beloved Seminoles, who had won 29 games in a row, lost to the Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl. I was crushed. Crushed on a level that has never been seen in my fandom. I can't imagine how the players felt. Playing on one of the largest stages in football, turning the ball over 5 times, and not being perfect anymore.  

Not being perfect anymore.  That has to be a difficult pill to swallow. I can't imagine how it feels. Unfortunately, that thought did not keep itself on the field. When the Seminoles and their staff returned to Tallahassee last night, amid much fanfare, after they signed autographs and returned to their cars, they found a surprise. Some of their tires had been slashed and their cars had been keyed. Keep in my mind, they can't accept money from anyone to fix it. It's up to them or their insurance (Lord only knows if they have it or what their deductibles are). How stupid is that?! People, I HATE to lose. I'm not the one playing. I can't imagine how they feel and on top of that, having their cars vandalized.  

EVERYONE needs to get a hold of themselves. Let me define everyone: 

1. Johnny-Come-Lately fans (fans that made themselves fans in the last 29 games). Truth be told. We don't need you. A group of you probably did the vandalizing.  

2. Haters of the Seminoles. For example, Gators, Canes, Clempsun, Auburn, Roll Tide. Did I miss anyone? Just because we beat you (except Alabama-we never played you) and Oregon beat us, doesn't make you an Oregon Duck. 

3.Oregon players chanting "No means No". Number one that's a sacred chant. We are able to use it because we get permission through the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Number 2 your school has been recognized as having a HUGE sexual assault problem. Like 10% of the female students. So, you aren't funny. And you WON'T be disciplined but that's ok. #Karma. 

4. All those people out there whether they are Bible class teachers or fans of other teams that want to judge Jameis Winston.(He's from Alabama so he started out your problem) Have you read anything!? Let's start talking a bunch of crap about Mariota or Braxton Miller or Blake Sims or Treon Harris, oh wait... You would defend your player too. 

You come at my team, you come at me. We win together, we lose together. 

I will neither confirm nor deny the mascara streaked cheeks. #TheresNoCryingInFootball
